Club Update 21st March

Club Update 21st March

Midleton Hockey Club is celebrating its 20th Season since the club was

formed back in 2002-2003. The club has grown incredibly over the last 20

years, and we have a healthy strong membership of nearly 300 registered

players.

To combine this celebration, although it has been 4 years in the making,

we were delighted to see the arrival of a new unit for the hockey club

which in time will give us kitchen & toilet facilities. We would like to

sincerely thank Aidan Kelleher from East Cork Crane Hire, (Members of the club), Eric

Calender and the team from Midleton College as well as Irish Distillers for the safe installation

of our unit. Their help was invaluable.

The previous executive committee were successful in applying for a Government grant which

gave us the financial basis to purchase this unit, but like most things over Covid, the grant has

ended up only funding 50% of our unit due to increasing prices.

On 15th April 2023, we are going to celebrate our 20th anniversary with a “Festival of Hockey”

fundraiser. Each team will have an allotted time where they will play 20-minute games, enjoy

refreshment in our new unit, we will have a raffle and we will be presenting each team with

their end of season awards. Team managers will be in touch shortly with times of games on

the day. Please keep the date free and more information will follow. If you are in a position

to supply a prize for the raffle, it would be very much appreciated. Please contact your team

manager.

As we approach the end of this season, the club has seen some great hockey & great

achievements by teams and individuals.

Huge congratulations to Andrew Sweetnam who has been picked for the Irish U16 boy’s

panel. Andrew was vice-captain of the Munster U16 team who won the Irish Interprovincial

this year, the first time in 19 years since Munster won this competition. We wish Andrew all

the best for a very exciting summer as Ireland will be playing in Europe.

Along with Andrew Sweetnam, Kayden Costa Holmes & Ollie Killeen were also picked for the

Munster U16 panel this year and we were delighted that Andrew Murphy & Matthew Carry

were chosen for the Munster U18 panel. Well done to all the boys.

Congratulations also to Elma Huggard & Jane O'Sullivan who have been chosen for the

Munster Master’s ladies panel. We wish these ladies the very best in Belfast over Easter.

We currently have many juvenile members trialling for various Development Panels and we

wish those participating the very best of luck over the coming weeks. It is a wonderful

experience for our members to represent their club & province.

Over the last few months, you will have noticed an increased presence of the hockey club on

social media. We have to sincerely thank Graham O'Sullivan for taking on this role and more

importantly, we thank Graham for redesigning our club website that I would urge you all to

look up, https://www.midletonhockey.com/.

Midleton Hockey Club -2023

Graham has worked tirelessly on sharing match & club information and giving us a new

platform to showcase our wonderful achievements. The club policies, teams, committee

members can all be found on our new website.

Midleton College has undertaken huge upgrades around the pitch in anticipation of our new

unit which will be fantastic when completed. There will be new hoarding made available

should your company wish to advertise around the pitch. Prices and panel sizes are almost

agreed and if you would like to secure a space, please email midletonhockey@gmail.com.

We have had a wonderful season of hockey. The talent & ability of our young players (and

senior players too) has been wonderful to witness, and it makes for a strong future for the

club.

I look forward to your support on 15th April!

Sincerely,

Daphne Spillane,

Chairperson Midleton Hockey Club
